YouTubeur versé dans le créneau très lucratif du paranormal sur le web, In-gong est toujours en quête du sujet en or. Car, bon, les portes qui claquent, les bruits qui courent, les couloirs vachement noirs, c’est bien gentil, mais ça ne renouvelle rien au contenu, et l’audience finit par se barrer pour mater un chaton danser la Lambada sur TikTok. Forcément, quand In-gong reçoit le contact d’un vieil « homme de la nature » harcelé et parfois même possédé par des fantômes dans sa forêt profonde, il flaire le buzz providentiel. Accompagné de son meilleur ami et de sa fidèle caméra, notre chasseur de fantômes se met en mode trekking pour rencontrer ce fameux ermite et, le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est qu’il va être servi en bizarreries inédites. Au départ, ce sont juste des petits trucs anodins : un peu de foutage de gueule par-ci, des comportements louches par-là, et un hôte vachement bipolaire, comme s’il n’était pas si solitaire que ça (du moins, dans sa tête). Mais, très vite, le malaise va monter en puissance et In-gong va se payer une décompensation psychotique carabinée… Déjà présent au BIFFF 2014 avec INTRUDERS, Young-seok Noh nous revient avec un film qui échappe à toute catégorisation : s’inspirant de divers phénomènes de société – l’industrie du web, les programmes télévisés vantant le retour aux sources et, plus fondamentalement, la déconnexion à la modernité -, il nous livre un miroir très angoissant et incroyablement sournois d’un monde en perte totale de repères. Le tout en première mondiale, siouplaît !

In de straten van Seoel is het ondertussen gemakkelijker geworden een influencer te spotten dan om een goedkope portie noedels te scoren. Tegen deze blitse achtergrond proberen twee jonge vloggers hun minder dan flitsende online carrière een broodnodige boost te bezorgen. Ze trekken samen het bergachtige binnenland in, waar op een afgelegen plek een man in volledige harmonie met de natuur leeft. Deze zogenaamde ‘Nature Man’ herbergt hen dik tegen zijn goesting in primitieve omstandigheden die duidelijk aan de verwachtingen voldoen. De eeuwenoude wijsheid waar ze op gerekend hadden blijft echter uit, terwijl ook wat de pot schaft erg blijkt tegen te vallen. Stilaan dringt het besef door dat ze overgeleverd zijn aan de grillen van een wel erg onvoorspelbare man die verdomd goed blijkt te kunnen omgaan met vlijmscherp landbouwgereedschap. En wat te denken van die verpakkingen van heerlijke thuisbezorgde noedelgerechten die onze helden per toeval tussen het afval aantreffen? Dat regisseur Young-seok Noh niet bepaald een fan is van gezonde berglucht, konden wij in 2014 al constateren toen hij op het BIFFF zijn INTRUDERS voorstelde. Nu doet hij daar nog een schepje bovenop, met een alle hokjes overstijgende film die onze hypergeconnecteerde wereld en ons verlangen om terug te keren naar de “authentieke” natuur op de korrel neemt.

It is now easier to spot influencers in the streets of Seoul than to score a bowl of cheap noodles. Against this hip background, two vloggers try to give a much-needed boost to their less-than-flashy online careers. Together they head to the mountains of inland Korea to a remote spot where (allegedly) a man lives in complete harmony with nature. This so-called ‘Nature Man’ begrudgingly – he’s more the solitary type – welcomes them in their home, a home that is as primitive as they had hoped for. However, their man isn’t quite the fountain of age-old wisdom they had imagined and he’s an awful cook to boot. It slowly begins to dawn on our heroic duo that they have put their lives in the hands of a pretty unpredictable dude who is surprisingly skilled at wielding razor-sharp farming tools… And what to think of all the wrappers of delicious home-delivered noodles they stumble upon in the trash? We already figured director Young-seok Noh isn’t much of a fan of healthy mountain air when he presented INTRUDERS at the BIFFF in 2014. Now he’s back with a film that is even harder to categorize: weird, frightening and taking the piss out of our hyper-connected consumerist society’s obsession with “returning to nature”.
