Ji Hyun-soo est à la tête d’une société prospère de détectives privés. Il est l’incarnation même du cool, ne quittant jamais la maison sans porter un smoking sur mesure. Bien qu’il enquête généralement sur des partenaires commerciaux douteux ou des maris infidèles, il n’hésite pas à s’occuper du chien d’une cliente, dognappé par un ex revanchard. Surtout si cette cliente est très séduisante. Il lui suffit d’aller chercher la cliente dans sa belle jeep, de la conduire jusqu’au chalet de l’ex et de menacer le type pour qu’il lui rende son chien. C’est facile. Mais à son arrivée, il se fait assommer à coups de batte de base-ball et, lorsqu’il se réveille, il a un couteau à la main et il est arrêté pour avoir kidnappé sa cliente… Sur le chemin du commissariat, par intervention divine ou par pure chance, la voiture se renverse dans un accident bizarre. Alors qu’il s’en sort avec quelques contusions, son ravisseur – le procureur Kang – n’est pas aussi chanceux, avec plusieurs fractures et hémorragies graves qui le plongeront dans un coma d’une bonne semaine. Re-coup de bol, leurs deux cartes d’identité ont été brûlées et, à cause du costume, tout le monde pense que Hyun-soo est le procureur Kang. Ce qui signifie qu’il a exactement une semaine pour utiliser sa nouvelle casquette de procureur afin de trouver les vrais coupables. Quant au chien, c’est désormais le cadet de ses soucis… Et ça, ce n’est que le premier quart d’heure de GENTLEMAN, qui vous réserve bien d’autres surprises. Pour son premier long métrage, Kyoung-Won Kim mélange habilement action-thriller et comédie – parce que les thrillers coréens n’ont pas toujours besoin d’être des coups de poing au cœur noir – avec un Ji-Hoon Ju (THE SPY GONE NORTH, ALONG WITH THE GODS 1 & 2) délicieusement suave dans le rôle principal.

Meestal gaat hij achter overspelige echtgenoten aan, maar hij voelt zich zeker ook niet te goed om de hond van een cliënte terug te eisen van haar ex. Zeker als die cliënte knap is. Het enige dat ie hoeft te doen is samen met haar naar het huis van de ex te rijden en de man te bedreigen tot ie ’t beestje trillend teruggeeft. Een eitje. Maar in de plaats daarvan krijgt hij een knuppel tegen zijn schedel. Wanneer Hyun-soo ontwaakt, heeft ie een mes in de ene hand, terwijl zijn andere hand geboeid is aan de politiewagen van procureur Kang. Hij wordt ervan verdacht zijn cliënte, die spoorloos verdwenen is, te hebben ontvoerd. Op weg naar het politiebureau kantelt de wagen van de weg. Hyun-soo komt er met wat kneuzingen vanaf, maar Kang heeft minder geluk. Zijn breuken en inwendige bloedingen gaan hem één week in een coma houden. Maar hun identiteitskaarten sneuvelden in het accident en gezien zijn maatpak gaat iedereen ervan uit dat Hyun-soo procureur Kang is. En in die nieuwe hoedanigheid heeft hij dus exact één week om de échte schuldige te klissen… Dat zijn al heel wat plotwendingen en we hebben het hier nog maar over de eerste 15 minuten van GENTLEMAN, die nog heel wat andere verrassingen voor jullie in petto heeft. In zijn eerste langspeelfilm mengt Kyoung-Won Kim deskundig spanning met komedie (want niet élke Koreaanse thriller moet als een stomp in je maag aankomen), met in de hoofdrol een heerlijk elegante Ji-Hoon Ju (THE SPY GONE NORTH, ALONG WITH THE GODS 1 & 2).

Ji Hyun-soo is the head of a successful private detective agency and the epitome of cool, never leaving the house without a tailor-fit tuxedo. While he usually investigates shady business partners or cheating husbands, he’s not above just going after a client’s dog that was taken from her by an ex. Especially if said client is very attractive. He just has to go pick her up in his fancy jeep, drive to the ex’s cottage and threaten the guy to give her dog back. Easy peasy. But upon arrival, he’s whacked with a baseball bat. When Hyun-soo wakes up, he’s got a knife in his hand and he’s under arrest for kidnapping his client… On their way to the police station though, by divine intervention or pure luck, the car flips over in a freak accident. While he gets off with just a couple of bruises, his captor – prosecutor Kang – isn’t quite so lucky, with several severe fractures and hemorrhages that put him in a coma that’ll last a week. But in the accident both of their ID’s got burnt. Because of the suit, everyone just assumes Hyen-soo is prosecutor Kang. Which means he has exactly one week to use his newly obtained powers as a prosecutor to find the real culprits and prove that he’s innocent… That’s quite a couple of twists and that’s only the first 15 minutes of GENTLEMAN, which has many more surprises in store for you. In his first feature, Kyoung-Won Kim expertly mixes action-thriller and comedy – because Korean thrillers don’t always need to be black-hearted gut-punches – with a seriously suave Ji-Hoon Ju (THE SPY GONE NORTH, ALONG WITH THE GODS 1 & 2) in the lead role.
