Rudi est l’exemple parfait du gars bien. Toujours poli, droit dans ses bottes, jamais un mot de travers, discret et efficace au travail. Bien éduqué, quoi. D’ailleurs, il fait la fierté de son grand-père, avec qui il partage un lien très fort. Mais, un soir, Papy reçoit un coup de fil de la police lui annonçant que son petit Rudi est impliqué dans un accident de voiture assez costaud. Papy imagine déjà le pire. La police lui annonce par ailleurs que Rudi est en tort et que les assurances risquent de lui siphonner ses maigres économies. Heureusement, l’autre conducteur n’est pas contre un règlement à l’amiable mais, pour cela, Papy doit réunir tout le liquide qu’il a chez lui et remettre cette somme sous enveloppe à un officier de police qui l’attend au bas de son immeuble… Bien évidemment, il suffira d’un coup de fil de Rudi pour comprendre que tout cela n’était qu’une arnaque dégueulasse. Et Rudi a beaucoup de mal à digérer ça. À tel point que c’en est fini de l’exemple parfait du gars bien, car personne ne touche à Papy… S’inspirant d’une véritable arnaque téléphonique qui s’est propagée comme un feu de forêt dans toute l’Europe de l’Est et jusque chez nous (oui, oui), Kristof Deak – oscarisé en 2017 pour son court-métrage SING – nous alerte sur ce phénomène méconnu à travers cette pépite inattendue, qui navigue entre le thriller et la comédie noire. Avec même un soupçon de larmichette émotionnelle, puisque son propre grand-père a fait partie des innombrables victimes. Une bien belle revanche sur grand écran.

Rudi is het schoolvoorbeeld van een brave jong. Altijd beleefd, op het rechte pad, nooit een kwaad woord, discreet en efficiënt op het werk. Kortom, goed opgevoed. En trouwens ook de oogappel van zijn grootvader, met wie hij een erg nauwe band heeft. Maar op een avond krijgt opa een telefoontje van de politie die hem mededeelt dat Rudi betrokken is in een zwaar auto-ongeluk. Opa houdt z’n hart al vast. De politie vetelt hem dat Rudi daarenboven in fout was en dat de verzekering hem ongetwijfeld z’n weinige spaarcentjes gaan opeisen. Gelukkig is de andere bestuurder wel te vinden voor een minnelijke schikking, maar om dat te doen moet opa eerst al z’n cash dat thuis heeft rondslingeren bij elkaar schrapen en de som in een enveloppe aan de politieagent die buiten aan de deur staat te wachten afgeven… Uiteraard volstaat een telefoontje naar z’n kleinzoon om te begrijpen dat hij in de luren is gelegd. En Rudi heeft heel veel moeite om dat te verteren. Zoveel zelfs dat het finito is met het schoolvoorbeeld van de brave jong, want niemand doet opa kwaad. Capiche?! Een echte telefoonoplichting die zich als een lopend vuurtje over heel Oost-Europa, en zelfs tot bij ons (jawel, jawel) verspreid heeft, lag aan de basis van deze film van Kristof Deak – die een Oscar won voor zijn kortfilm SING – die ons voor dit onvoldoende gekend fenomeen waarschuwt. Een onverwacht pareltje dat schippert tussen thriller en zwarte komedie, met zelfs een hint emotionele traantjes – zijn eigen grootvader maakte immers deel uit van de vele slachtoffers. En kijk, nu heeft ie z’n wraak op het grote scherm!

Rudi is the perfect example of a goody-goody. Always polite, on the straight path, never a disagreeable word, discrete and efficient at work. A man with manners and the pride of his grandpa, with whom he has a very strong bond. But one evening Grandpa receives a phone call from the police telling him Rudi has been involved in a pretty heavy car accident. Grandpa already fears for the worst. The police tell him that Rudi’s the one who caused the accident and that the insurance company is probably going to soak up whatever savings he’s got left. Luckily the other driver is not against an amicable settlement, but to do so Grandpa first has a gather all the cash he’s got lying around to house and hand over the sum in an envelope to the police officer that is waiting in front of his door… Of course one phone call to his grandson is enough to realize he’s just been scammed. And Rudi has a very hard time digesting that. Such a hard time even that he decides he’s no longer going to play mister nice guy. Cause nobody lays a hand on his Grandpa… Capiche?! Inspired by a real-life telephone swindle that spread like wildfire all over Eastern Europa, and which even reached our country (that’s right), Kristof Deak – who won an Oscar for his short SING – sheds light on this still little known phenomenon. His film falls in between a thriller and a black comedy, with even a hint of emotional tears thrown into the mix: his own grandfather was one of the numerous victims of the hoax. Well, now he’s got his silver-screen revenge!
