Il y a bien longtemps, dans une galaxie lointaine appelée les années 80, les effets spéciaux au cinéma se déclinaient surtout en maquettes et en carton-pâte. Puis vient un mec comme James Cameron qui révolutionne l’industrie avec sa créature d’ABYSS et son robot de TERMINATOR 2. Dans la foulée, Spielberg retourne complètement le cinoche avec ses dinosaures ultraréalistes de JURASSIC PARK. Côté cour, on a souvent octroyé tout le mérite à ces réalisateurs avant-gardistes. Côté jardin, par contre, c’est une tout autre histoire… Car l’artisan de génie derrière cette révolution numérique est un fouille-merde. Une grande gueule, un anarchiste qui se fout de tout et de tout le monde. Steve « Spaz » Williams a propulsé les CGI (computer generated imagery, au cas où) à un niveau stratosphérique. Il a repoussé les limites du possible, outrepassé des ordres directs pour créer les fameux dinos plus vrais que nature et a, littéralement, créé le cinéma à grand spectacle du 21e siècle. Tout seul. Dans son coin, avec son PC et sa grande gueule… Avec ce documentaire, Scott Leberecht réhabilite un inconnu qui mérite pourtant le statut de légende vivante. Un rebelle qui a touché le fond pour avoir amené le cinoche à son firmament, qui a essuyé le crachat de ses pairs tandis qu’eux recevaient une pluie de félicitations. Alors, oui, « Spaz » est peut-être un connard arrogant, mais il a redéfini la notion même de « blockbuster » avec son seul génie et son culot. Chapeau bas, bravo, et il était temps !

Pasje naar Spielberg, die de bal bemachtigt en een touchdown scoort met zijn hyperrealistische dinosaurussen in JURASSIC PARK, een Big Bang voor de populaire filmproductie. Hulde aan deze heren, die de film in een nieuw tijdsperk binnenloodsten! Da’s het officële relaas, maar er is een ander verhaal, over een geniale ambachtsman die de digitale revolutie op gang trok. Een notoire lastpost met een grote mond, een anarchist die zich van niets of niemand iets aantrekt. Zijn naam is Steve “Spaz” Williams en hij is degene die de CGI (‘computer generated imagery’, voor zij die onder een steen leefden de afgelopen 30 jaar) naar nieuwe hoogtes heeft gestoten. Hij negeerde directe bevelen om zijn befaamde dino’s tot leven te brengen en zodoende eigenhandig de blockbuster van de 21ste eeuw te creëren. Op z’n eentje. In een hoekje, met z’n PC en z’n grote mond… Met deze documentaire wil Scott Lebeecht een man die in de vergetelheid sukkelde in ere herstellen als een levende legende. Een rebel die diep heeft gezeten omdat ie de film naar nieuwe hoogstes stuwde, terwijl anderen met de pluimen zijn gaan lopen. Dus ja, “Spaz” was ongetwijfeld een arrogante lastpak, maar het is net zijn ego en zijn genie waar hij de blockbuster mee herdefinieerde. Hoedje af, bravo, hoog tijd om hem te geven wat ie verdient!

A notorious troublemaker with a big mouth, an anarchist who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about anything in the world. His name is Steve “Spaz” Williams, and he’s the one who pioneered CGI (for those of you that stayed stuck under a rock in Jurassic Park for the last 30 years, that’s short for computer generated imagery) to new dazzling heights. He ignored direct orders to craft the hence famous bigger-than-life dinos and literally created the blockbuster of the 21st century. All by himself. In a little corner, with his computer and his big mouth… With this documentary, Scott Leberecht rehabilitates a man who fell into oblivion but who should be venerated as a living legend. A rebel who hit rock bottom for having pushed cinema to its peak, who had to wipe off the spit of his peers who took all of the credit. So, yeah, “Spaz” may very well have been a gigantic, arrogant pain in the ass, but he has single-handedly redefined the notion of “blockbuster” with his genius and wit. Hats off, bravo, about time he gets what he deserves!
