Dans un futur proche où toutes les idéologies ont été broyées par l’ultra-libéralisme total, Rachel et Aly vivent un amour parfait grâce aux bienfaits de l’intelligence artificielle à domicile. Tous leurs besoins sont satisfaits grâce à cette femme de ménage cybernétique : ce qu’il faut manger, ce qu’il faut porter, ce qu’il faut faire, quand il faut travailler, comment il faut travailler, relever la planche des toilettes, éviter de penser à gauche, tourner à droite… Tout est géré par la technologie. Lorsque Rachel – qui a toujours rêvé d’avoir un enfant – reçoit une promotion bien méritée, son patron lui propose de payer en partie une grossesse artificielle au “Womb Center” dans le cadre de ses avantages sociaux, afin qu’elle reste conforme à l’image de la femme américaine qui réussit. En gros, elle se paie un utérus artificiel détachable, ou un « pod », et se débarrasse du même coup des vergetures, des gonflements de pied et des fringales incontrôlables, tout en restant au top de sa productivité professionnelle. Le seul frein, c’est Aly, son botaniste de mari. Un mec un peu trop « old school », qui préfère de loin le miracle de la biologie humaine à ce Tamagotchi hors de prix… 13 ans après être passée nous dire bonjour au BIFFF avec COLD SOULS, Sophie Barthes est de retour à Bruxelles avec une satire dystopienne délicieusement glaçante. In een nabije toekomst waarin alle ideologieën verpletterd zijn door het alles omvattende ultraliberalisme, leeft het koppel Rachel en Aly in volledige symbiose dankzij de voordelen van de artificiële intelligentie in huis. Al hun behoeften worden vervuld door deze cybernetische huishoudster: wat te eten, wat te dragen, wat te doen, wanneer te werken, hoe te werken, hoe de toiletbril omhoog te doen, hoe niet links te denken, hoe rechts af te slaan… Alles wordt bepaald door de technologie. Wanneer Rachel – die er altijd van heeft gedroomd een kind te krijgen – een welverdiende promotie krijgt, biedt haar baas aan, als onderdeel van haar voordelenpakket, een stukje van een kunstmatige zwangerschap in het “Womb Center” te betalen. Zo kan ze het beeld van de perfecte, succesvolle Amerikaanse vrouw blijven ophouden. In feite koopt ze zichzelf een ‘portable’ artificiële baarmoeder, of “pod”, die haar verlost van striemen op de buik, gezwollen voeten, losgeslagen hormonen en alle andere kwaaltjes die tot voor kort bij de zwangerschap hoorden. Terwijl ze wel aan de top van haar professionele productiviteit kan blijven. Fantastisch, toch? Het enige probleem is haar echtgenoot Aly. Hij is een beetje van de oude stempel en verkiest het wonder van de menselijke biologie boven zo’n dure Tamagotchi… Dertien jaar geleden kwam ze ons op het BIFFF begroeten met COLD SOULS en nu is Sophie Barthes eindelijk terug in Brussel met een heerlijk ijzingwekkende, dystopische satire onder de arm.
