Kamil en a marre de suivre les cours à travers Zoom et de traîner dans son gigantesque manoir avec une belle-doche shootée au yoga, et un paternel en meeting perpétuel à Dubaï. Rien à foutre de tout ça ! Il va organiser une fête d’enfer pour tous ses amis dans la résidence secondaire de son père, un palais au bord de la mer en Pologne, sans masque et sans gel hydroalcoolique ! Avec Aga, extrémiste vegan prête à se nourrir avec les rayons du soleil, sa petite amie Max, Luiza l’intello, Tola la gothique et ce qui semble être des milliers d’autres camarades de classe, il se met en route vers la destination de la fête. Dans le troupeau de guindailleurs, quelques invités surprises comme M. Blitz, un survivaliste aux faux airs de Khal Drogo et, forcément, quelque chose qui vient de l’eau. Alors, non, on ne part pas sur des carpes ou des crevettes énervées, mais plutôt sur un mélange toxique qui transforme tous les nageurs en personnages préférés de tonton Romero ! Alors oui, c’est bien venu de l’eau, mais nous préférons le titre original polonais : “Apokawixa”, ou Apocalypse Party, ce qui est exactement ce que le réalisateur Xavery Zulawski nous livre ici. Une fête épique, aux proportions dignes du PROJET X, presque aussi délirante que les films de son père, le regretté Andrzej Zulawski, avec beaucoup de sexe, de drogues, de rap polonais et de zombies enragés. Mention spéciale au zombie végétalien, sujet de thèse philosophique à lui tout seul…

Kamil is dat hele coronagedoe zo beu, met al het lessen volgen via Zoom en godganse dagen thuis rondhangen met als enig gezelschap zijn ex-psychiater en papa’s nieuwe vriendin, terwijl vaderlief af en toe eens dag komt zeggen via de helikopter, tussen twee vergaderingen in Dubai door. Genoeg! Tijd voor een megalomaan feestje in het buitenverblijf van paps, een paleis aan de Poolse kust, zónder social distancing. Samen met esoterische eco-activiste en zijn geheime crush Aga, diens idiote vriendje Max, sexy seut Luiza, gothic Tola en zijn honderden andere knuffelcontacten van op school trekt ie naar de feestbestemming, met nog enkele verrassingen terplekke zoals Mr. Blitz, een soort autarkische Khal Drogo die in het woud leeft volledig voorbereid op de Apocalyps en… iets dat uit het water komt! Nu goed, we moeten er niet al te mysterieus over doen: Kamils vader dumpte het chemisch afval van z’n bedrijf in de baai naast het feestje van de tieners en pootjebaders veranderen er nu in bloeddorstige zombies! Dus ja, het kwam inderdaad uit het water, maar wij verkiezen toch de originele Poolse titel “Apokawixa”, of Apocafeestje, want dat is precies wat regisseur Xavery Zulawski hier neerzet. Een feestje van epische, PROJECT X-proporties dat bijna zo waanzinnig is als de films van z’n papa, wijlen Andrzej Zulawski, met seks, drugs, Poolse rap en een horde zombies die trek heeft in puberbreintjes… en één vegan zombie die het eerder op de flora heeft gemunt!

Kamil is so done with the whole COVID-19 lockdown shtick of following classes through Zoom and hanging around his gigantic mansion stuck with his dad’s new, yoga-instructing girlfriend while the old man himself only occasionally flies in by helicopter in between Dubai business meetings. Fuck all that! He’s going to throw one hell of a party for all of his friends in his dad’s secondary residence, a palace at the Polish seaside, safety restrictions be damned! Together with his esoteric eco-warrior secret crush Aga, her bone-headed boyfriend Max, book-smart Luiza, goth chick Tola and what seems like thousands of other classmates he sets out to the party destination, alongside a couple of surprise guests like Mr. Blitz, some kind of autarkic Khal Drogo who lives in the woods fully prepared for the Apocalypse, and… *creepy voice* something that came from the waaaater!! Well, no need to get all mysterious about it: it’s Kamil’s dad who dumped his company’s chemical waste into the bay next to the teenagers’ party location, causing an acute local problem of swimmers turning into blood-thirsty zombies!! So yeah, it came from the water alright, but we prefer the original Polish title: “Apokawixa”, or Apocalypse Party, which is exactly what director Xavery Zulawski delivers here. A party of epic, PROJECT X-like proportions that is almost as delirious as the movies of his daddy, the late Andrzej Zulawski, with lots of sex, drugs, Polish rap and raging and outrageously funny zombies. Seriously, it’s incredibly well-written and has some of the most brilliant ideas in all zombie-hood! Like, what do you get when a vegan is bitten by a zombie? A vegan zombie! Just think about that for a second…
